Vertical Gastrectomy
Successful Weight-loss Surgery Option
http://www.cpmc.org/lapsurg
John Feng, M.D., Medical Director, Bariatric Surgery at California Pacific presented a research paper in Chicago on the newest weight loss surgical technique, the Vertical Gastrectomy. According to Dr. Feng’s associate, Paul Cirangle, M.D., “Vertical Gastrectomy is emerging as the quickest and most successful obesity-related surgery.”
In addition to Vertical Gastrectomy, our surgeons also perform Adjustable Gastric Banding also known as LAP-BAND®, the only completely reversible obesity surgery, Duodenal Switch, and Roux-en-Y (RNY) gastric bypass, the most common of weight reduction surgeries.
The vertical gastrectomy procedure is recommended for older, higher risk patients or patients with a BMI of 50 or above. Since Vertical Gastrectomy is not a malabsorption weight-loss surgical technique nor rearranges the intestinal tract, and the stomach is reduced in size but functions normally, risks of protein deficiency and vitamin deficiency are almost eliminated. Another advantage of Vertical Gastrectomy is that it removes the portion of the stomach producing hunger-stimulating hormones.

Mental Health and Children
http://www.cpmc.org/services/mental-hlth...
On June 7, 2005 the San Francisco Chronicle published an article on a recent medical report stating many symptoms of depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder emerge in children as early as age 11. The report also stated that approximately 50% of American adults with mental disorders began with mild symptoms by age 14 such as low-level anxiety or persistent shyness. Bipolar disorder is rare in childhood and more often can first declare itself in the mid- to late teenage years. According to the press release from the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), “Untreated psychiatric disorders can lead to more frequent and more severe episodes, and are more likely to become resistant to treatment. In addition, early-onset mental disorders that are left untreated are associated with school failure, teenage childbearing, unstable employment, early marriage, and mental instability and violence.” Additionally many teens with bipolar disorder abuse alcohol and drugs to self-medicate.
Bipolar disorder causes powerful mood swings, from overly excited or irritable to extreme sadness, with normal moods in between. Extreme energy and behavior changes accompany these mood swings. The periods of highs and lows are called episodes of mania and depression. It is important to note that many symptoms--including periods of decreased sleep, increased energy and elevated mood-- are common in adolescence when present briefly or periodically. There is greater concern when these symptoms persist day after day or for a week or more. NIMH provides these signs and symptoms of mania and depressive episodes.
Signs and symptoms of a mania episode include:
Increased energy, activity, and restlessness
Excessively "high," overly good, euphoric mood
Extreme irritability
Racing thoughts and talking very fast, jumping from one idea to another
Distractibility, can't concentrate well
Little sleep needed
Unrealistic beliefs in one's abilities and powers
Poor judgment
Spending sprees
A lasting period of behavior that is different from usual
Increased sexual drive
Abuse of drugs, particularly cocaine, alcohol, and sleeping medications
Provocative, intrusive, or aggressive behavior
Denial that anything is wrong
Signs and symptoms of a depressive episode include:
Lasting sad, anxious, or empty mood
Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, including sex
Decreased energy, a feeling of fatigue or of being "slowed down"
Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
Restlessness or irritability
Sleeping too much, or can't sleep
Change in appetite and/or unintended weight loss or gain
Chronic pain or other persistent bodily symptoms that are not caused by physical illness or injury
Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
If your child or teenager displays any of the signs or symptoms of bipolar disorder, talk to your pediatrician and find out more about the services offered at the California Pacific Medical Center Mental Health Clinic to help children and adolescents with mental health needs.
