DynaMed Weekly Update
May 5, 2009 Volume 4 Issue 18
DynaMed Systematic Literature Surveillance

For the week ending May 1, 2009

This week, 750 articles were considered for inclusion in DynaMed and 250 met criteria for inclusion.

While no articles reviewed this week met the editors’ criteria of “articles most likely to change clinical practice,” the editors would like to share information on two new topics and provide an update on Influenza A (H1N1).

Quality Measures Added to DynaMed

In the United States, two major national quality initiatives are the Medicare/Joint Commission National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures and Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) 2009 Physician Quality Measures.  Quality improvement (and measurement of quality through nationally defined explicit measures) is becoming more common as a point of care concern. DynaMed has received multiple requests recently to include this information in our core content, especially as our content is integrated more with electronic health record systems. We have responded by adding a Quality Improvement section to 93 topics listing the specific relevant quality measures.  We hope this provides the most useful information at the point of care.

For more information, see the Medicare/Joint Commission National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures and Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) 2009 Physician Quality Measures topics in DynaMed. Send feedback to

Influenza A (H1N1) Update

As of May 5, 2009, the number of confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) is 1,515 with cases occurring in 21 countries. Most cases have occurred in Mexico (822 cases), the United States (403 cases) and Canada (165 cases). Since the
Influenza A (H1N1) topic was created on April 25, 2009 (originally Swine influenza), it has been updated multiple times daily as new recommendations are issued and significant changes in the level of the outbreak have been reported. Changes have occurred in case definitions, testing recommendations, antiviral treatment recommendations and travel warnings within guidance documents published by international and national public health authorities. In addition, Influenza A (H1N1) – Clinical Management was created to provide a rapid summary of key clinical management highlights.
