The Overscheduled Child: Stress and Children

Headaches, stomach aches, depression and anxiety are common symptoms of stress seen in the pediatric office. Children experience stress from family disruption such as divorce, as well as pressure from their own and others' expectations of superiority. Whether in academics, sports, other extracurricular activities, or even in their appearance, being "average" is no longer acceptable.

Learning to cope with a certain amount of stress and uncertainty is an important life skill. It is healthy for children to take on challenges, but not to the extent that they begin to lose the sense of fun and relaxation that is essential in childhood. Read more...

Glara Kang, M.D., received her M.D. degree in 2001 from Saint Louis University School of Medicine after graduating from the University of California, Berkeley. She completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. She is board eligible in pediatrics.
