Interest in Art Led to Career in Cosmetic Surgery
David White, M.D., a senior cosmetic surgeon in the Palo Alto Medical Foundation's (PAMF) Department of Cosmetic Surgery at the Palo Alto Clinic, has always been drawn to the beauty of the human form.

"I was interested in art before I could read," Dr. White recalls. "I began sketching when I was very young, and became more serious about portrait painting in junior high and high school."

The fact that he was able to sell his oil portrait paintings in high school and college was testament to his natural talent. Dr. White says this long-time interest in the human form as art made for a natural transition to a career in cosmetic surgery.

Mirror Imaging Shows Patients "Before" and "After"
Thanks to a software tool used by the Palo Alto Medical Foundation's (PAMF) Cosmetic Surgery Department, patients can see pictures of how they may look after certain facial cosmetic procedures.

Photos are taken of the patient and the images are downloaded to the mirror imaging software, then changes are made to the images based on information from the cosmetic surgeon. The patient can then view pictures of his or her appearance "before" compared to likely "after" outcomes of different facial surgeries, such as changes to the nose, face, eyes, forehead and chin.

Featured Service: Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include heredity, multiple pregnancies, prior surgery, significant fluctuations in weight or congenital spine abnormalities that affect posture.

If you desire a tighter, flatter abdomen, then abdominoplasty (also referred to as a tummy tuck) may be appropriate to help you achieve your goals. In general, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in some cases restores weakened or separated muscles. This creates an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer, often enhancing your body image and confidence.

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

Prior to scheduling a procedure, it's important to discuss your goals for the treatment with your plastic surgeon. Below are a list of questions to ask your physician.

  1. Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
  2. What will be expected of me to get optimal results?
  3. What are the risks involved with my procedure?
  4. How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
  5. Will I need to take time off work? If so, how long?
