The ABCs of Healthy Relationships

We recently launched a new section of our teen Web site called: The ABCs of Healthy Relationships

Written for teens, parents may find it helpful to look over themselves or share it with their child.

The ABCs of Healthy Relationships: Awareness, Balance and Choices includes information, skill building and value clarification activities, as well as resources and conversation starters. Use "The ABCs" as your guide when evaluating your current relationships and developing new ones later in life.

Relationships can play a major role in our lives, especially during the teen years. However, not all relationships are healthy. Sometimes we associate with people who may not have our best interests in mind. It's vital that you learn to recognize a healthy relationship from a harmful one.

"The ABCs" includes skill-building activities and value clarification exercises to help you develop healthy relationships. Our slogan is: Run your relationships; don't let them run you. We believe that you are in charge of each of your relationships.

Gynecological and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month: September
www.thegcf.org

September is both Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. This year, the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) joins with the ovarian cancer advocacy community in educating women about the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Historically, ovarian cancer was called the "silent killer" because symptoms were not thought to develop until the chance of cure was poor. However, recent studies have shown this term is untrue and that specific symptoms are much more likely to occur in women with ovarian cancer than women in the general population. Women who have these symptoms almost daily for more than a few weeks should see their doctor, preferably a gynecologist. Prompt medical evaluation may lead to detection at the earliest possible stage of the disease and an improved prognosis. To find out what these symptoms include, visit the Gynecological Cancer Foundation Web site.

National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month: September

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recover Month. Initiated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, the 18th Annual Recovery Month is a commemoration that occurs in cities and towns, big and small, nationwide throughout September. It celebrates and recognizes the efforts of people who are in recovery from alcohol and drug use, as well as those of their supporters and treatment providers. This year's theme is "Join the Voices for Recovery: Saving Lives, Saving Dollars" and asks people to remember that everyone can help ensure that treatment and recovery from substance use disorders is attainable, affordable and effective. To learn more about how you can participate in and support Recovery Month, visit the Recovery Month Web site.

Baby Safety Awareness Month: September
www.jpma.org

This September marks the 24th anniversary of Baby Safety Month, sponsored annually by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). This year's Baby Safety Month campaign is titled "Out & About With Baby" and provides insight into the world of outdoor safety to make each outdoor experience with babies and toddlers enjoyable. From carriers to car seats to strollers and more, there are a wide variety of products and protections (from sun, bugs, wintry weather and health, as well as playground safety tips and more) that parents and caregivers use these days. Visit the JPMA Web site to learn more about how you can stay "out and about" safely in the great outdoors with your baby and what protections might be best suited for him or her.
