What You Need to Know About the HPV Vaccination
by Mary Parman, D.O.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the Unites States, and studies have shown that women and men in their late teens to early 20s are at greatest risk. In fact, 40 percent of HPV infections occur in people who have only been sexually active for two years. HPV is transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact and is strongly associated with cervical cancer and genital warts. There are approximately 40 HPV strains that can infect the genital tissues of men and women. Read more to learn how the new HPV vaccination relates to your child...

Fireworks Safety Month (June 1 – July 4)
www.preventblindness.org
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), children age 15 and younger suffer more than 50 percent of all fireworks injuries in the United States – and sparklers are the highest cause of fireworks injuries requiring trips to the emergency room. Sparklers can easily burn children since they heat up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (hot enough to melt gold). Fireworks are exciting, fun and spectacular, but decades of experience have taught us that they can be dangerous and should be left to professional fireworks handlers. Be safe and protect your eyes this 4th of July. Go to professional displays and enjoy the spectacle in the sky. For information on preventing eye injuries and other eye health topics, visit the "Play it Safe" section of the Prevent Blindness America Web site.
National Headache Awareness Week (June 1-7)
www.headaches.org
It can be disheartening to be the parent of a child who gets headaches. Many worry that the pain is caused by a genetic factor the child inherited from them or emotional distress the child cannot yet describe. Parents need to know that they are not alone and that there is help for children with headaches. The National Foundation (NHF) reports that more than half (approximately 60 percent) of all children experience headaches. Fortunately, once your child's doctor discovers the cause and type of the headache, there are many safe and effective approaches or medications that can prevent a headache from occurring or stop it after it has started. Visit the NHF Web site to learn about the different types and causes of headaches in children and how you and your doctor can help.
National ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day (June 21)
www.paxusa.org
Parents ask all sorts of questions to protect their children when they go play at the home of a friend, neighbor or relative. But there is one important question that more than half of parents say it never even occurred to them to ask: "Is there a gun where my child plays?" According to the non-profit gun-violence prevention group PAX, more than 40 percent of homes with children have a gun, and many of those guns are left unlocked or loaded. Just talking to your child about the dangers of firearms is not enough. Children are naturally curious. If a gun is accessible in someone's home, there is a good chance a child will find it and play with it. Visit the PAX Web site for ASK Day information, real stories, statistics and advice on how you can help keep children safe from guns.
