Protect Your Child’s Vision from 'Lazy Eye'
by Omondi Nyong’o, M.D.

"Lazy eye" is the number one cause of vision loss in children and a problem I often see in my pediatric ophthalmology patients. When most of us think of "lazy eye," we think of people with wandering eyes, but that is only one form of the disorder. There are other types that can be just as damaging to a child's vision and that may have no easily visible outward signs that parents can detect. Read more about how to protect your child from "lazy eye"…

National Sobriety Checkpoint Months (July/August)
www.madd.org

Your child might be too young to drink. Your child might even be too young to drive. But your child is still at risk. Drunk driving is one of the nation's deadliest crimes – killing more than 13,000 children, parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends every year. That's why Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has launched the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving. By working with a network of affiliates, like-minded organizations, parents and volunteers, they're taking the fight against drunk driving to a new level. MADD invites you to talk to your kids about the dangers of underage and binge drinking. It may not be easy, but it may save their lives. Visit the parent section of MADD's Web site for statistics, resources, research and information on how parents can get involved and take action.

World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7)
www.llli.org

According to the La Leche League International (LLLI), breastfeeding improves both infant and maternal health, improves infant nutrition and benefits society. The LLLI mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. Visit www.llli.org to get breastfeeding help, listen to podcasts, find resources for health care providers and more.

National Immunization Awareness Month (August)
www.cdc.gov

The goal of National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is to increase awareness about immunizations – from infancy and beyond. Because children are particularly vulnerable to infection, most vaccines are given during the first five to six years of life. Other immunizations are recommended during adolescent or adult years, and for certain vaccines, booster immunization are recommended throughout life. NIAM says now is a good time to remind family, friends, co-workers and those in the community to catch up on their vaccinations because in August parents are enrolling their children in school, students are entering college and healthcare workers are preparing for the upcoming flu season. Visit the CDC Web site for a Childhood and Adolescent Immunization Schedule, a Parents' Guide to Childhood Immunization and infant immunization materials.
