"Pink Eye" and Your Child
By Judy Ou, M.D., PAMF Ophthalmology

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids that is usually due to an infection (bacterial or viral), allergies or irritation.

When most parents think of pink eye, they are often concerned about a bacterial infection of the eye. However, redness, irritation and tearing are symptoms common to all forms of pink eye. A visit to an ophthalmologist can help families distinguish between the different causes and ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Read more about pink eye and your child...

Every parent wants their child to be born healthy, to grow up strong and have the chance to be successful in his or her life. During the nine months of pregnancy, important development occurs that can affect your baby for the rest of his or her life. Birth Defects Prevention Month seeks to increase the public's understanding about the causes and prevention of birth defects, a leading cause of infant mortality. If you or your partner are planning to conceive, visit the Healthy Baby Resource for the latest information on how to reduce the risk of birth defects.
