Vaccines: Protect Yourself and Your Family
By Bill Black, M.D., Ph.D.

I recently took my two teenagers to their doctor to update their immunizations. For a few seconds of pain and a day or two of sore arms, they are now protected against a host of scourges, including meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, hepatitis and cervical cancer. Vaccines are one of the most effective ways to protect ourselves, our children and our communities from illnesses that once wreaked havoc on humankind. Allergy and Asthma Awareness Day: May 6

The Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) sponsors Asthma Awareness Day on Capitol Hill each May to increase awareness of asthma and allergies. This national nonprofit network helps families control and overcome allergies and asthma by helping them understand the importance of healthy living and taking responsibility for healthy outcomes. Visit the AANMA Web site for practical information, including articles, videos, downloadable books and activities to help your family manage the symptoms of allergies and asthma.

Better Hearing and Speech Month: May
www.asha.org/bhsm

Sponsored by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Better Hearing and Speech Month raises awareness about communication disorders and promotes early treatment that can improve the quality of life for children and young adults who experience problems with speaking, understanding or hearing. The earlier a child's speech and language problems are identified and treated, the less likely the problems will persist or get worse. Early speech and language intervention can also help children with reading, writing, schoolwork and interpersonal relationships. Learn more about child speech and language development, so that you and your child can celebrate better hearing and speech every day.

Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month: May
www.melanomamonday.org

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) estimates that we get about 80 percent of our total lifetime sun exposure in the first 18 years of life. The AAD sponsors Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention month each May and reminds families that sun prevention in infancy and childhood is also very important because severe sunburns in childhood can lead to skin cancer later in life. Check out the AAD's Parents' Guide to Sun Protection for Children to learn how you and your family can safely have fun in the sun.
